How the 4% rule works
The 4% rule comes from retirement research suggesting you can withdraw 4% of a diversified investment portfolio in the first year of retirement, adjust for inflation each year after, and have a high chance of never running out of money. Your FIRE number is simply your annual expenses multiplied by 25 — the portfolio size that makes a 4% withdrawal equal to your spending.
- Lower expenses, lower target: every $1,000 less you spend per year shrinks your FIRE number by $25,000.
- Invest the gap: the bigger the difference between what you earn and what you spend, the faster compounding works.
- Pair it with cashflow: assets that generate passive income — rentals, dividends, businesses — can fund your life before you ever sell a share.
